Essentials for winter camping in Saskatchewan

Let's start with a disclaimer - I am writing this article while my friends and I plan our first camping trip into the deep-freeze this January... However, this will be even better than having tips passed down from your "professional" survivalists! Firstly, you can see exactly how well these tips pan out once our story is published on our Stories page. Secondly, pros tend to gloss over details that come second-nature to themselves, but not necessarily to those who are venturing out for the first time. Thirdly, we're terrified. We're going the extra mile to research what we need to make this comfortable, especially since we'll be setting up camp a fair distance from the vehicles.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

I wonder if I've become normalized to the ingenuity of our group when we're out in the woods... We've built our fair share of useful junk from the bounty of the forest. I may not be the most avid bushcrafter, but some of my friends' skills are reaching Flintstonian proportions.

Nate is one of those friends. He's never had any formal instruction— just good old Canadian know-how. On one rare occasion, when he was too exhausted to be annoyed about being photographed, I captured his process for building one of the most convenient tools on our trips: the tripod.

Hi Jean-Paul,

We've known each other for a while now. We've shared some of the most brutal hikes and extreme cold weather together. We've bonded over terrible dinners— hell, I couldn't even tell where the Puritan Irish stew began and the dog food ended! ... But what's going on? Why did you give me the cold shoulder at Waskwei River? I was looking forward to having you over in my tent, while your lazy owner went to sleep early in his hammock. Instead, you just whined and moaned until running back to him. He must really have you on a leash.

I hope we're still friends. But if you have a problem with me, just say something man.
